What it is
An AI copilot is an assistant embedded inside a piece of software that helps with a specific task on request: drafting an email, summarising a candidate profile, suggesting a Boolean search string, or generating interview questions. It sits inside an existing workflow, such as an ATS or CRM, and produces a suggestion, a draft or an answer each time a person prompts it. The recruiter reads the output, edits it as needed and decides what happens next.
The defining trait is what starts the exchange: the human. A copilot has no memory of the wider account, no ongoing task list and no way to act on its own between prompts. It is reactive by design, useful for a single step, but it does not run a process. Ask it to draft a message and it drafts one message. Close the tab, and nothing else happens until you open it again.
Ask a copilot for a draft and you get one draft. Hire an AI sales employee and the whole motion runs without you asking at all.
Why it matters
Copilots have become common across recruitment software: ATS platforms now ship AI drafting assistants, LinkedIn Recruiter offers AI-suggested search terms and message drafts, and most CRMs have added some version of an "ask AI" field or compose box. For a single task done occasionally, that assistance genuinely saves time: a copilot writing a first-draft email is faster than a blank page.
The limitation shows up at the level of the whole BD motion, not the single task. A copilot cannot decide which companies were worth researching this morning, cannot watch for a funding round overnight, and cannot build a queue of prioritised work while the recruiter sleeps. Every one of those steps still needs a human to open the tool, frame the request and prompt it again. Multiply that across a full desk's business development and the copilot adds convenience to each step without reducing the number of steps a consultant has to personally drive.
How boilr handles it
boilr is deliberately not built as a copilot. Rather than waiting inside a compose box for a consultant to ask for a draft, each consultant's AI sales employee runs continuously: discovering companies, sourcing candidates, watching for buying signals across thousands of sources, scoring accounts against the desk's ICP and drafting outreach on its own initiative. Nobody has to remember to prompt it; the work is already sitting in a task inbox by the time the consultant opens boilr each morning.
The consultant's role stays central, it just moves to the other end of the process. Instead of driving every step through prompts, they review the finished tasks boilr has already prepared and verify and send the ones that are right, typically in five to twenty minutes a day. That is the practical difference: a copilot needs a prompt for every unit of work; an AI sales employee needs a decision only once the work is already done.
