What is a boolean search string?
A boolean string is a search query built from operators like OR, AND and NOT plus quotation marks for exact phrases. It tells LinkedIn Recruiter or Google exactly which profiles to surface, so you control the breadth of a search instead of guessing with single keywords.
What is the difference between the LinkedIn and Google X-ray strings?
The LinkedIn string is built for the keyword box inside LinkedIn Recruiter and Sales Navigator. The Google X-ray string starts with site:linkedin.com/in, so it finds public LinkedIn profiles straight from a normal Google search, no Recruiter seat required. This builder generates both from the same inputs.
When should I use OR versus AND?
Use OR to widen a search: list every job title or location variation a person might use, and a match on any one counts. Use AND to narrow it: every required skill must appear in the profile. A good string is broad on titles and tight on the few skills that actually matter.
